This time, I’m introducing Kawataro, the original restaurant that popularized live squid sashimi.
Originally developed in Yobuko, Saga—famous for fresh squid—you can now enjoy this delicacy right in Nakasu, Fukuoka.
At Kawataro, fresh squid is scooped from the tank in front of you and prepared on the spot. The freshness is unrivaled.
You can also try their famous “Crystal Sushi”, named for the beautifully translucent squid.
If you’re looking to savor top-quality squid in Fukuoka, this is one place you can’t miss!
Kawataro Nakasu Honten: A Hidden Gem in Deep Nakasu
Kawataro is located deep in the nightlife and entertainment district of Nakasu, Fukuoka.
Kawataro Nakasu Honten – Fukuoka’s Original Live Squid Sashimi
Depending on which way you approach, you may have to pass through one of Nakasu’s more risqué areas. Gentlemen, be prepared for some persistent street solicitors.
Passing by the calls of touts, you’ll finally reach Kawataro.
A traditional and refined exterior.
Alongside a mysterious statue.
Inside, a large tank filled with live squid greets you.
Once your order is placed, the squid is caught right from the tank and prepared fresh.
Enjoy your meal while watching the squid swim by at the counter seats.
We ordered beer and the live squid sashimi while enjoying a small appetizer.
Note: this is a relatively upscale restaurant, so some dishes are quite pricey. Live squid sashimi is 2,940 yen per person (as of 2012).
All servers wear traditional kimono.
Still Moving! Ultra-Fresh Live Squid Sashimi
Soon, the live squid sashimi arrived!
Incredibly translucent—and still moving!
Here’s a photo taken at a different time—you can even see how the color changes as it moves.
From another angle, the squid looks firm and glistening. The chewy texture and slight sweetness pair perfectly with Kyushu-style soy sauce.
Our companion @goryugo was fixated on the soy sauce—apparently, it was that good.
Next up, live prawn sashimi!
They also twitched! Though they mysteriously froze when we tried filming.
At the table next to us, guests were offering beer and juice to the servers—a unique Nakasu experience.
After enjoying the sashimi, the squid was turned into tempura—delicious!
Even the prawn heads were deep-fried to a satisfying crunch.
“Crystal Sushi” – Beautiful, Translucent, and Delicious
On a different visit, I returned to try their other signature dish—Crystal Sushi, priced at 1,575 yen. It might seem pricey for lunch, but considering the freshness and presentation, it’s well worth it.
Other options include the “Live Squid Set Meal” for 1,980 yen.
(*All prices are as of 2012.)
At the entrance, a kappa statue greets you—a quirky mascot of sorts.
We arrived during lunchtime and waited 20 minutes. Groups arriving by taxi seemed common, indicating it’s also popular for business entertaining.
Inside, a U-shaped counter surrounds a tank teeming with squid.
The squid, delivered fresh from Yobuko, Saga, is prepared right after ordering.
(This time, the prep area was hidden from view.)
Here it is—the long-awaited Crystal Sushi.
Unlike the opaque squid you see at most supermarkets, this is almost translucent, showcasing its pristine freshness.
Even the nameko mushroom miso soup that comes with the meal is excellent.
Just look at that clarity!
The texture is perfectly chewy and the flavor is outstanding. As expected from the birthplace of live squid sashimi.
And dessert is included—all for 1,575 yen. Totally worth it.
Kawataro Nakasu: Perfect for Sightseeing or Business Lunches
Dinner here is wonderful, but lunchtime is more affordable while still offering the same amazing freshness.
Highly recommended for travelers or business entertaining in Fukuoka!
